Hello my friends - I thought it was about time i got going on my new car,

- I want to be the first British guy to have a crack at Formula off road -

It's being built with Formula in my mind - but if i'm rubbish at it or scare
myself half to death !! then it can go back to a pro-mod car after .

Made a start with a 3" tube chassis bent up to make the car a low as possible

This will be fun to follow Jeff!
Keep up posting pics!!

We have been waiting for this.
Please tell us about the project - engine, axles, tranny, springs/shocks etc..(It will be a Landy I suppose?)
Ready spring 2009?

You really took the term 'tube frame' quite literally! :eyemouth:

Really excited to see what this turns into, keep us posted! :smokin:

Looks like a salisbury front axle fram a early Land Rover 110 hcpu.

Have you all parts to get the car ready Jeff??

Jeff Carter
11-11-2008, 09:16
Yes your right its going to be a landrover with salisbury front and rear but with good bits inside :smokin:

Kjellis - i have most of it but still need to buy air shoxs and bumps and paddle tyres and a good seat - maybe a nitrous kit

Some of our top racing 4x4's in England use this type of chassis so i hope it will work for me - its about the same weight as the old range rover chassis- but without the rust - ha ha

Jeff Carter
11-11-2008, 09:55
I bought a TH400 auto that was an ex-drag racing box and i have just converted it to run with a landrover lt230 tranfer case , and the prop runs real close to the autobox but this is normal in this conversion and should be okay. a few more pictures

Looking good!! That prop does look cozy close to trans break and cooler pipes!!! Still got your old car, might it be upfore sale soon???

Jare
11-11-2008, 19:41
Nice Jeff

So you finally started the project. Are you aiming to Modified or Unlimited class??

And yes you will need nitrous unless your engine has some really cool parts in it.

What sort of wheelbase you are planning to have?

OFFTOPIC: Who in UK sells disc brake kits for Volvo portal axles?

Jeff Carter
11-12-2008, 09:14
Tim - keeping old car for now to use in Germany ( Eurotrial ) but may sell after to fund this new one .

Jare - hello mate - I plan just to have a go in the modified class and depends on money how many good bits go in my engine  but theres a bit of a pile so far , all that stuff on my bonnet of my old car are the bits to the engine - thanks to Tim
The length is 100 inch same as a range rover but i swop props to push front axle forward and so the engine can go lower .

As for volvo brake conversion - theres knowone now as far as i know !! the guy who done my old axles has gone out of buisness.
The only ones i know are portaltec and omt in germany.

Also can anyone show me a link to the formula safety/driving regs in english ?

And a WARNING to all when making a new car put safety glasses on
as i just been all morning up the hospital having metal removed from my eyes  us old boys never learn :laughing:

Jeff Carter
11-13-2008, 13:45
Done a bit more - engine and gearbox mounted with the axles in place and out riggers for the roll cage - need to get my seat now to see where to go with the cage !! as you know me we like it low

Jeff Carter
11-17-2008, 14:48
done a bit more - got some 50mm cds tubing and a kirkey seat

Just got to put it all together now !!

Jare
11-19-2008, 19:33
Are you plannig to drive the buggy from the left side? Ain't that a bit strange for you?

Jeff Carter
11-20-2008, 09:12
Mmmmm - not sure yet - there is more room on the left plus the prop shaft is not under my leg !! so maybe yes - and yes will be real strange to drive on that side , but will give me an excuse if i'm rubbish !!

Jeff Carter
11-20-2008, 14:59
going to be a real low rider :smokin:

Jeff Carter
11-27-2008, 17:03
got a bit more done - the rear cage is now welded in it's looking a bit more like a truck now

Hilux
11-27-2008, 21:59
Sweet Jeff, looking good:beer:

You got some really nice bends around the "window frame". Looking forward to see moore of it done..

Jeff Carter
12-01-2008, 14:47
Thats the cage best part done  will put door bars in after i've done the inside - to make things easy.

Starting to shape up now - a landy in the making :shaking: :shaking:

and its going to be left hand drive ????? thats going to be fun ------- not

If there's any scrutineers - looking in please comment if you see something wrong or if if needs a brace or whatever - thanks

but there is one more brace to go in the rear hoop by the outriggers - each side.

Amund
12-01-2008, 18:59
Looking good Jeff. I want to see something to keep the cage from folding down over the frame in case you land hard on the lid - how about a tube from outer lower corner of A-pillars (down by the floor) meeting in a triangle in the middle of the dashboard bar, then running one tube straight up to the roof from there? In the back it looks like the cross will take care of everything.

Jeff Carter
12-02-2008, 08:55
Hi Amund - yes i agree with you but theres got to be room for my feet and pedals - so this does restict where my braces go !!

I was thinking something like this

Amund
12-02-2008, 19:41
Got a few ideas:

31932

31933

PS. Don't shoot the messenger. This is just the late Mr. Isaac Newton talking through me!

Tommy
12-02-2008, 19:44
munds latest picture shows the best solution...

Amund
12-02-2008, 19:44
OK just one more, sorry. I think this one is my favourite so far, if there's room around the gearbox that is. Should give you plenty of space for the footwork.

Jeff Carter
12-03-2008, 09:02
Wow Amund - you have thought of this , the red and yellow ones don't allow room for feet and pedals as they will go under the front hoop - and the blue is good for the feet but only holds up the middle of the front hoop .

my design - I think gives more strength to the outriggers ??

The doors bars will be added last - so i can work on the inside without climbing over them all the time .

and the blue rear bars you added look good - boy all this going to add some weight -

Anymore ?

Jeff Carter
12-03-2008, 09:50
You have got me thinking about this now

Amund
12-03-2008, 10:41
Remember that a straight tube meeting another straight tube (or end of a triangle) is much stronger than a tube welded 90 degrees to another... so my blue idea will be stronger than your last one... also much easier to build

Actually, to be 100% sure I would use my blue sketch and then add my yellow sketch, that way the cage can take a real beating, both on the corners and also the middle of the roof, to my understanding. Anyway, these are just ideas, let's see what the other lads think.

Hello Tommy mate - The old car as you can see in the background of my workshop is sat there without it's portals !! i have sold them and now my car is back on standard rover axles !!!!

But we are looking into buying a new car for Eurotrials and we will see it at the end of this week

So my old car will be for-sale if we buy this new one and they cash will be put towards my new project build.

Just ordered my new air shox - the larger 2.5 fox 12" for front and 14" for rear , do any you guys run these ? or do you use 2.0 ones -
these will be the first 2.5's in England ?
As for spec on it Jare well mate - its a LS1 stripped ready for a few blingy bits and i think a sniff of nitrous might be good.
I was going to run a supercharger on it but funds will not allow this just yet !!

no idea about the rest so i will make it up as i go along Thefinger

As for the new car well - you will all have to wait till Eurotrial !!!!!!!!!

Hello Jeff.

When i look at this picture i wonder which distance do you have between the rollcage and the center of the seat?

http://pirate4x4.no/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=42821&stc=1&d=1246395310

Here are the text in the rules:

"Minimum distance from center of driver seat to outer edge of rollcage is 40cm. (measured at shoulder height)"

Jonas - The rules you sent me say nothing about this 40mm rule ? is it a new one ?

And by the way mine is 30mm :( I could maybe squeeze it over another 5mm but no chance with 10 ? also then all pedals will be wrong :(

I think i may lock the workshop up and give up for a while :(

For vehicles licensed after 01-01-2006:
1. Minimum size of roofplate is 0,75 m2
2. Minimum width of rollcage is 100cm.
3. Minimum distance from center of driver seat to outer edge of rollcage is 40cm.
4. Tube connecting left and right side of main rollbar mounted as low as possible in the chassis.
6. Tubes connecting front and rear rollbar. Preferred location is as low as possible in front bar and mid height in the main rollbar.

I hope you soon are "on the road again".

to bad Jeff , Im sure you'll solve the issues and keep on building
- gonna be a nice rig

Jeff Carter
07-27-2009, 15:02
Well - My car for sure is now not to be a right hand drive as there's no room to move the seat over - I chopped out the pedals and the left side footwell and bought another Kirkey seat to see if i can make it left hand drive ?

But it's not looking good for this frame now - yes the seat will move over to 40cm rule but it then give me far more problems with pedals ,headers , servo and it's looking very much like this frames is useless and i may have to start all over :shaking: making a wider one

Geir
07-27-2009, 15:24
if you need some inspiration , i might think this will do :grinpimp:

Geir

if you cut and make the frame wider , its just the rollcage that has be done again , right ? and engine/suspension mounts -> the other tubes/frame can be cut ,fixed and welded again ?
- this is goin to be a nice rig at the end

sven
07-27-2009, 23:54
is it room for some stuff over the pedals? if so, cant you extend the pedalover the pivot point, and fit the master brake cylinder facing the other way? then everything in front of the firewall will be unaffected by the brakes...

if you dont have room for a brakeservo as I see you want to use now you can use two wilwood masters as they use on rallycars...

I will add a simple drawing over what I mean... my technical english really sucks:)

I chopped out the pedals on the right side of the car and also cut all the footwells out on both sides and will start again - as a left hand drive :(

Well no - because all the other bars have to meet the main rear roll hoop ? unless i put a second whole cage over this one it would not be legal.

It took a years work to get this far - and my grinder has just chopped up a least 6 months of that work - so i should get the next new one done in 2011 :laughing::laughing::laughing:

Well my friends it's been a while coming but we have finished the car and it's going to have a photo shoot and article for the largest off road mag in the UK :smokin: and we test it for trials at this weekend too -

Just a shame about my mess up with the rules otherwise the car would be coming to your sand hills to play :( looking like this - maybe oneday i will build one for Formula with a wider roll cage !!
